HMRC – no more credit card payments

Thursday November 2017

If you blow your cash over Christmas and are planning to pay your self-assessment tax bill (due no later than 31 January 2018) with your credit card you’ll be out of luck. HMRC won’t accept credit card payments after 12 January 2018. This goes for all tax payments, not just those for self-assessment.

So if you were relying on paying a tax bill due on or after 13 January by credit card, e.g. your PAYE bill for December, you’ll either have to pay earlier or make other arrangements.

HMRC not to blame. While we all like to point the finger at HMRC for its shortcomings, this time it’s not entirely to blame. While it could have given better and earlier warnings about the change of policy, the underlying cause is new EU regulation. This prevents the passing on of credit card charges to the customer. The alternative for HMRC was for it to swallow the charges, which of course it couldn’t do without unfairly penalising taxpayers who don’t pay by credit card.
